I haven’t made a post since July. But that’s not important. It’s time to talk about video games.
For those who are unaware, Kingdom Hearts is a series very near and dear to my heart (no pun intended). And, its fanbase is huge. AND, this fanbase is very, very excitable. It may have something to do with the fact that many fans including myself grew up with this wacky Disney-Square Enix crossover, or that it’s been over a decade since the initial release of Kingdom Hearts II. Granted, several games in the series have since released, but III has always been the big one fans have been waiting for.
Now, in the year 2018, we have a release date for the game that will wrap up the current Kingdom Hearts “saga” as well as several trailers which, in Kingdom Hearts fandom fashion, have been picked apart and analysed frame-by-frame. This is a series where every little detail matters. But now, on to the most recent trailer: The 2018 Tokyo Game Show trailer features the game’s Big Hero 6 world as well as chunks of gameplay in other worlds and bits of story that have fans losing their minds. Check it out:
Yes, that is Utada Hikaru you hear singing.
You may be asking, “Who is this anime boy and why is he with Donald Duck and Goofy? What’s this about darkness? Why does this old man look so sinister? Is that blue chick okay? Why the heck is Mickey Mouse here? Davy Jones?” In short, I can’t explain it to you without linking you to several YouTube series and/or places to buy every Kingdom Hearts game so far. It’s a lot. It’s convoluted. It’s ridiculous. And I love it.
For those of you who do know what the heck is going on, or if you’re just curious, here is my personal reaction:
Aqua. Aqua, honey, I am so sorry. You did everything you could to protect your boys and you fought off the darkness for so long. I respect you. I will save you. DEMYXNORT?! WHO MADE AXEL CRY? Is that Riku Replica or Data Riku in the black coat? Terra, sweetie, come back to us. Ooooof that gameplay, mmMMMM. Gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous. Hayner! Pence! Olette! Vanitas, I’m sorry your life has been awful but if you do not back off of Best Girl I swear on Eraqus’ GRAVE I will… ROXAS. Oh boy. I need this game.
Honestly, I don’t know what I’ll do after Kingdom Hearts III. This game has been with me for over half my life. The experience of waiting, being on edge, freaking out at reveals – that is something that connects the fans along for the ride. It’s something that can’t be imitated, no matter how many times I decide to revisit the games – and I definitely will revisit. It’s like the end of an era. Really, the thought of life after finally defeating Master Xehanort is odd and a little intimidating. But like any English-speaking Kingdom Hearts fan knows,
“Regardless of warnings, the future doesn’t scare me at all. Nothing’s like before.” -Utada Hikaru
